Burger King for breakfast. I had the bacon crosandwich. John had the enormous breakfast sandwich. We would have preferred to have eaten a burger but we were too early. Plus we were too lazy to find a Whataburger. The enormous sandwich wasn't very big. In fact I made John a sandwich when we got home after going to the bank, post office and grocery store.

Barnaby's Cafe. I took this photo in the women's restroom. It was so crowded at the restaurant that I didn't photograph on the way in. Saw this in the restroom and decided it would work in a pinch. The food is fantastic. John and I ordered hamburgers. They were so large. I cut mine in half so I could eat it easier. John didn't and made a mess. It is a really busy place. We had a difficult time finding a place to park. Several people brought their dogs and were eating outside in front. I guess we are just going to the dogs.

Some of the features are very similar to the Memorial Grill. Same grinding seasalt and pepper dispensers. Dessert display case was the same. Same black straws. Also some similarity in menu.

West Alabama Ice House. We stopped off here just to sip a couple of drinks. I guess we could have bought a bag of potato chips so I could count it as eating. The place is totally open. A number of dogs roam all around. You can play horseshoes, basketball, or pool. Definitely not an elegant eating establishment. Jukebox has a wild mix of musical taste. Looked like a birthday party was setting up as we were leaving.

Napoli's This is a kinda dumpy looking place but the food is delicious. I ordered the Eggplant Parmagiana sub, John ordered spaghetti and two meatballs. I think my selection was the best. The marinara sauce was so tasty John licked it off his fingers.

Sunday, April 16, 2006

Taqueria Arandas John ordered the Pasole. He thought it was very good. I ordered a shrimp torta. I asked the waitress if the shrimp was grilled. She said yes. There were not grilled. I don't think she spoke enough English to really understand. I was disappointed in my order. I think I was probably wanting a shrimp po-boy at a Mexican food restaurant. We will probably go back another day. I just need to order better.

Tortuga Coastal Cantina

This is one of our favorite places to eat. The two restaurants nearest us closed down. I was afraid that the whole chain had closed. I was delighted to discover this one on Hwy 6 in Sugar Land. It is located next to a watery area. I'm not sure if it is man made or a bayou. Whatever it is makes a nice setting. We sat back in a little gazebo next to the water and watched some birds and fed the ducks.

The best item on the menu is the crusted chicken. It is fantastic. And their Spanish rice is so flavorful. I was so happy to find this place again. I guess we will have to return again to Sugar Land and the Turtle.

delicious food. We split an order of oyster poor boy and crawfish etouffe.
We were there early enough to order from the lunch menu. The etouffe was so good we ordered another to go.

That's John in front of Double Dave's Pizza. We decided to try this place out. Sunday is all day buffet. They kept announcing the new pizza as they brought them out. Dav'e fave meatball was really tasty. The dessert pizzas were great too. We used to have a CiCi's pizza nearby but it closed. It cannot compare to Dave's. It is kinda funny. We had said we needed to stop going to all you can eat buffets.

We haven't been out in a while and our ninth anniversary was on the 7th so we decided to go to a romantic place to eat. It wasn't romantic but it did serve some very tasty hamburger. We ordered the Mushroom burger and the Bacon guacamole burger. We each ate half. Both burgers were delicious. We also ordered bottomless fries. We left the place very full. They have lots of neat stuff to keep you checking out the interior. A TV in the floor, the Statue Of Liberty, a big Red Robin (kinda looks like a red chicken) are just a few items I noticed.

I could never remember the name of this place. I have always called it Lum Lum. It is a great place to get alot of food for very little money. John always orders the triple meat noodles. I order General Joes chicken. We eat until we are full and walk out with enough for another days meal. And all of this for a little over ten dollars.

Sunday, January 01, 2006

I always eat too much when I go to a buffet. I guess it is the idea of getting your moneys worth. This time I think I did better. I wasn't totally miserable when I left. I had some steak. It was ok. It was well done. I had to holler for someone to help me. I think that my be their way of limiting the servings. Don't have anyone over there and the people go get easier food. They did have Brussels sprouts. I got myself a big ole helping of them. For dessert I saw they had a hot fudge dispenser. I tried to get a hot fudge sundae but the fudge side was empty. The other side was caramel and it wasn't very hot and it also ran out while I was pumping it on my icecream. The food was good. But it seemed like everything was still sticky from pancake syrup leftover from breakfast. I had to move chairs and broom/dustpan to even sit down at the table.

I have had a craving for a good po-boy sandwich. We decided to head downtown and check out Original New Orleans Po-Boys. At first it looked like there was a long line inside. It wasn't. You just come in and order then pay at the end of the counter. You then find a place to sit off on the side. Really great food. We sat there and watched the trains going by.

Sunday, December 11, 2005

We went to Pearland and decided to drop by Kelly's. We arrived at around 11:55. Just a bit before the church bunch. The place was already crowded. We took a small table by a window. It was in a high traffic area. The menu, drinks and food were quick in coming. After that the service was lousy. Our waitress walked by the table at least three times. Not once did she ask if we were alright or needed anything. John never even got a refill of coffee.
John ordered the Country Breakfast. It came with 3 eggs, hashbrowns, biscuit, and a huge platter sized chicken fried steak. I selected the chicken fried steak lunch special. The food was great. It was really way too much food to eat.

Saturday, December 10, 2005

We decided to try Cracker Barrel. It was very crowded when we first arrived. The general manager was visiting with some people at the table behind me. I didn't think the guy would ever leave. Eventually he managed to bump me in the head. You would think that someone in charge would be more considerate of their patrons.
John ordered breakfast. I ordered chicken fried chicken. The food was good but the serving sizes were kinda small.

Tuesday, December 06, 2005

We have eaten at Memorial Grill twice. Both times I have ordered a burger. John ordered meatloaf once and the foot long chili dog the other time. Both times the food and service were great.
This is a new place in the neighborhood. Hopefully they will be successful and stay around. The desserts look delicious. Next time we go we plan on skipping the meal and just get dessert.

Sunday, November 27, 2005

Today is John's birthday. We went to IHOP for breakfast. I ordered the International Passport breakfast. I chose Swedish pancakes. They were kinda rubbery. John ordered the Big Country breakfast. The other food was good. The service wasn't so good. Our waiter spoke English with such a thick accent I wasn't certain what he was asking me most of the time. He also gave us the "bums rush". We had barely tasted the food when he dropped off the check and said he would be back to pick it up. Then he was reaching across both of us to grab the empty plates etc.

Day after Thanksgiving. We were in Pearsall and stopped by the Cactus Bowl Restaurant. The place was packed with people. We came in hoping to try their chips/salsa. But they had run out. Rather than ordering Mexican food we all ordered their 'tasty' burgers. They were very good but service was very slow. At one pointa cattle truck passed by. We jokingly said that maybe the beef had just arrived. Hopefully they have already dug upthe potatoes.

Sam's Deli Diner

This is one of the best places to get a burger. We enjoyed it when they were on the other side of the freeway. Now they have moved to the southside of the Katy freeway we can almost walk to it. We could walk to it. It is getting back home after being stuffed is the problem. I always order the burger basket. They have an all day burger that is huge. Only attempt this burger if you haven't eaten all day.

Tuesday, November 01, 2005

We stopped off at Max E. Mo's to pick up a pizza. We ordered two pizzas. One was the meaty (pepperoni, Canadian bacon, sausage). The other was Mama's Mediterranean (cheese, sausage, tomatoes, onion, olives, etc) Both were delicious. The toppings were piled on generously.

Taqueria Cancun

This is our all time favorite place to eat. Even when you are broke you can afford this place. We ordered Torta and fries. It comes with soup, rice and refried beans. John ordered tongue. I got the beef. John always spills something on his shirt and today was no exception.
You can't see the van but it is parked next to the red pickup on the right.

Sunday, October 16, 2005

We were out driving out in Katy and saw this caboose. So we stopped to look at it and noticed the county line marker. You can kinda see the van is parked in Harris county. Look below the 17 on the caboose and you can see front passenger side headlight.

Saturday, October 15, 2005

Went to Rudi Lechner's for my birthday. Thought we would revisit our German heritage. We ate German food and listened to German music. At one point we even heard a little yodeling.

I ordered Jaegerschnitzel, spaetzle, and red cabbage. John ordered Weinerschnitzel, fried potatoes, and mixed vegetables. They could have been more generous with the potatoes. Food was delicious. It was more expensive than our usual budget. But it was a special day so we splurged.

Sweet Mesquite

We both ordered the Buffalo Burger basket. John ordered onion rings. I ordered fries. John tought the onion ring were good but too small. I actually like the smaller sliced onion rings. The fries were really good. The buns they used on the burgers are extemely good. I like the texture and sweetness of the bread. We both decided that this is a great place to eat. John wants to try the chicken fried steak sandwich next time.

We went driving around Houston last weekend and noticed this lady sitting by the street. Actually it is at a lawyers office. Very unusual there are railroad cars painted bright colors. I suppose if I ever need a lawyer I'll check with him first.

Kenny and Ziggy's

We were driving around Hoston and decided to stop at the Container Store. I noticed Kenny and Ziggy's in the same shopping center and decided to try it out. I saw them featured on PBS and Houston Press named it the best deli for 2005.

We ordered a club sandwich and split it. The sandwich was huge. The place is more expensive than the places we normally go. They had three pickles in a bowl for an appitizer. The flavor was alittle stange. Kinda like a Polish pickle but not exactly. John ate them so they weren't too bad. The only complaint is they didn't refill our drinks. We were sitting at the table right next to the drink station and you would have thought someone would have noticed.

Lucky Village
This is a favorite place to eat. It has the largest buffet I have ever seen. My favorites are the Cantonese noodle, General Joe's and sesame chicken. Other favorites are the fried corn and stuffed crab claws. Always eat too much and walk out feeling miserable.

Tuesday, September 27, 2005

Feng Ling

We were returning the speakers that we bought at Fry's. We stopped off to eat at Feng Ling. This is another favorite place to eat. We have a small delivery version nearby. We ordered General Joe's chicken and Mongolian Beef. They have a nice lunch special. A bowl of soup, egg roll and the main dish. Very tasty.

Drove around west Houston on Saturday to survey the damage caused by Hurricane Rita. Found this "building" overturned at the corner of Memorial and Hwy 6 behind the new Starbucks. It was only after I returned home that I began to worry that perhaps someone could be trapped in the building.

Paul's Seafood and Oyster Bar

We had been hunkered down because of Hurricane Rita. Decided we had to get out and survey the storm damage. If we were stopped by police we would show John's Press ID.

This was the only place we could find open. We had always talked about eating here. I guess it is the allure of eating in a building shaped like a boat. We ordered a bowl of gumbo, stuffed shrimp, and fries. The gumbo was too hot (spicy) for me. The stuffed shrimp tasted like they used stove top stuffing and the order of fries were small.

The place was packed with people. I think everyone had the same need to just get out. It is more a bar then a restaurant.

Thursday, September 22, 2005

Ready for the hurricane! Since we could not evacuate, we have prepared a supply of water just in case.

Saturday, September 10, 2005

Mikki's Cafe
We were at Fry's and noticed this restuarant across the street. John had been told it was a great place to get oxtails. I ordered the beef plate with cabbage and green beans. John ordered Oxtails with macaroni/cheese and greens. Very generous helpings and tasty.

Sunday, August 21, 2005

We found this train car at the train museum in Galveston. I thought it was kinda funny.

Wednesday, August 10, 2005

This is a picnic blanket I made from polyester fabric. John and I used it the other day. Only problem is that it is a little too small for both of us to comfortably lay on it. It was all the striped fabric I had.

Sunday, August 07, 2005

John loves Zambonis. This photo and about 10 more were taken at the Memorial City Mall. We just happened to be walking by when the Zamboni was out working. We have three small model zambonis. The first we found geocaching at Brazos Bend state park. It is a Houston Aeros zamboni. The other two (Albany River Rats and the Washington Capitals) were found at a dollar store.

West Houston neighborhood visited by UFO. This is a photo taken as it went behind some trees.

Sunday, July 31, 2005

Area park terrorized by plastic gorilla.

Saturday, July 30, 2005

We were driving around today and came upon this huge muffler out in front of an Auto repair place. I thought it was worth photographing. I think the street is Westview, but it could be Longpoint.

Tuesday, July 19, 2005

We were walking in Hermann Park and saw this sign. Not too many wild flowers more like weeds dying.

Saturday, July 16, 2005

We were out walking in Burroughs park when I noticed something odd in the water. I was carrying my camera so I was able to take a photo of the "animal" as it raised its head out of the water. I was a little panicked as I tooked the picture. Everything happened so fast I didn't get a chance to really compose my picture. :)

Friday, July 15, 2005

We found this sign when we were visiting Deussen Park. It looks a little bit like someone drowning rather than swimming.

Wednesday, July 13, 2005

We found this inviting bench on a visit to Kingsville. It also offers a lovely view of a truck bumper. Just took the photo. We did not actually sit on it. We had just finished eating at Lydias. A really cheap and delicious place to eat. I always order the Panchos.

Tuesday, July 12, 2005

This photo was taken during our camping trip to Buescher State Park during spring break 2005. We had a difficult time getting the fire started. I was goofing around an decided to roast a Vienna sausage.

Monday, July 11, 2005

This is a bathroom on an Amtrak train. We rode the train from Houston to Galveston. It was a special run that they did during Mardigras. The train never went faster than 25 mph. I brought along my gps and had it on for awhile to see the speed of the train. It was a fun trip. We parked behind the Railroad museum in Galveston. It was great because you don't have to worry about where to park the car.

Places to Go
A portapotty used by my husband. I try never to use them.
